Hello And Welcome To This Foolish Endeavour

Hi there. Whether or not you’ve discovered this from me talking about it, by reading my other blog, or maybe you’ve just stumbled upon this craziness, it’s nice to have you here.

So here’s the plan: I’m going to try and watch 366 films in 2012. It’s a leap year (for those of you who hadn’t figured out the significance of 366) and so I thought it’d be fun to do something BIG. Also, I’m kinda unoccupied most of the time these days.

The cynics among you may be thinking that to watch the equivalent of a film every day for a year is not too much different from my usual life but to these claims I must protest. Well, you’re not too far off but a film a day is not my usual habit.

Yes, I watch many, many, many films but to put this into perspective, in the last two months of 2011 I managed to clock up about 45 films I think. Not bad but I need to add an extra 16 and keep it up all year long. I foresee long weeks without sleep.

The film critics among you may be thinking that this is a bit like Julie & Julia. You are right. Only, I don’t really have a book to work from, a film critic idol, a wife or husband, my own house, or a job. I would like there to be a book, a film, and a shed load of money made from this blog though. That would be nice.

The films I’m watching won’t all be films I haven’t seen before as I thought it better to have a few golden oldies and favourites in here somewhere. I’m guessing that lots of the films I watch will be new for me though.

Simultaneously to this task, I’m working my way through Empire Film Magazine’s 500 Greatest Films list. Although I’m not aiming to watch all 500 because some of them look awful and others just look too darn scary, I’m thinking that it’d be nice to see about 300 of them. So far, I’ve clocked up 237 of the 500, and that’s over my entire life. I started this challenge late last year when I was only at a measly 198 and so in the last two months of 2011 I worked hard to see a few more films. Looks like I’m going to have to work harder now!

I’ll be rating the films as I go along just so that this blog will not only be a place where you can read my ramblings but also to get an opinion on any film which I watch. The ratings will be as follows:
***** 3 words: See. This. Film.
**** An excellent film which I highly recommend
*** A ok film. Or at least, I like it anyway
** Bad. But if you’ve got the time, why not?
* 3 words: Kill. Me. Now

I will also be adding helpful hints along the way such as whether or not this is a good film to watch with your boyfriend or girlfriend, and also a few memorable lines. Or at least, lines which made me laugh.

There is a very great chance that I’m not going to succeed in this feat and this blog may be quietly laid to rest mid-February but until I am defeated I aim to fight to complete this task!

And so without further ado, I launch myself into a year of films good and bad, old and new, well acted and ham acted, well directed and with stupid shaky cam which makes you think the camera man is a 5 year old with ADHD (Bourne Identity I’m looking at you).

As Han Solo (and just about every other character in Star Wars) once said: “I have a bad feeling about this…”

  1. Ello old pal! Its been too long.

I also have a horrible habbit of watching too many films. Sarah hates me for it. I really feel the need to give you my must watch films, whether you want me too or not.

All 6 Rockys (Watch them AS QUICK as possible. Dont delay it over a week. try and do it in 2 days) They may be extremely hetro. But they are classics.

All 8 Harry Potters – Obvious!

Arnold Schwarzenegger Films – End of Days, Kindergarten Cop, Eraser, Collateral Damage, predator, commando, true lies. (I could list all 21 off my collection)

Marley and Me, 50 first dates, Cocktail, White Chicks.

I slightly give up. But I will defiantly get more too you In due time :)

    • It has been too long indeed!

Right – recommendations noted! I’ll try and get round to watching them soon. I have been meaning to watch Rocky as I’ve never seen it and I do kinda have to I guess, but your idea of a Rocky marathon has merit!

As for the Arnie films, I’ve only seen Predator so I’ll definitely get round to some more of his catalogue.

I fear that Marley & Me would make me want to die very quickly but you never know.

  2. “Craziness” it may be, but I’m glad to have stumbled across your blog – it’s a great idea for a challenge, and I wish you the best of luck! I’m doing something similar this year, but I think documenting it sounds like the kind of hard work that just… sounds hard. You have my respect; keep up the awesome work.
